What is a Patent?

A Patent is a full-cover bet on three selections, combined into 7 bets:

  • 3 singles (one on each selection)
  • 3 doubles (every pair)
  • 1 treble (all three)

The singles are what set it apart from a Trixie: with a Patent, one winner already returns money, and each extra winner stacks doubles and the treble on top. It's essentially the three-selection cousin of the Lucky 15.

Worked example

Three selections, all at odds of 3.00, with a €1 unit stake (€7 total). If all three win:

  • 3 singles × €3 = €9
  • 3 doubles × €9 = €27
  • 1 treble × €27 = €27
  • Total return = €63, a €56 profit on your €7 stake.

With just one winner you'd still collect that selection's single — tap the others to Lost and the calculator shows the return from the single alone.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Patent bet?
A Patent is a bet on three selections combined into 7 bets: 3 singles, 3 doubles and 1 treble. Because it includes the singles, just one winning selection already returns money.
How many bets are in a Patent?
7 bets. A EUR1 unit stake costs EUR7 in total (7 x EUR1).
Do you need all three to win in a Patent?
No. Thanks to the three singles, one winner already returns something. Two winners add a double; all three add the remaining doubles and the treble on top.
What is the difference between a Patent and a Trixie?
Both use three selections. A Trixie has 4 bets (3 doubles + 1 treble) and needs two winners. A Patent adds the 3 singles, making 7 bets, so one winner already pays - it costs more but has a single-winner safety net.
Is a Patent the three-selection version of a Lucky 15?
Very close in spirit - both include singles so one winner returns money. A Patent is 3 selections (7 bets); a Lucky 15 is 4 selections (15 bets). The Lucky family also often carries bookmaker bonuses that a Patent may not.
Can I do an each-way Patent?
Yes - an each-way Patent is 14 bets (7 for the win, 7 for the place), costing twice the unit stake. This calculator shows the win part.
